THE SAME RIVER TWICE
I was born, like Hank Williams, with a hole in me and so went searching for a way to fill it. Only
sheer will kept me plodding. Up north I was warned against stepping into the same river twice.
Elsewhere, frozen embryos were considered children, and the protein powder wasn’t protein. I
suspected a connection to the deviltries of Big Pharma or Big Tech. One day a young woman
visited a clinic. While taking her medical history, the nurse asked, “Are you sexually active?”
“Oh no,” the woman said, “I just lie there.”
