EPITAPH FOR FORGOTTEN POETS
Facebook has sent me a reminder that today is Mike James’ birthday. Facebook doesn’t know
Mike James is dead. He died two years ago. Pancreatic cancer. I hadn’t heard or seen his name
in a while, though I have sometimes thought fleetingly about him. Mike James wrote poetry. He
was a published poet. You can find his books on Amazon. I never spoke to him in person, only
online. We exchanged poems in emails. He was as genuine as a tree. Today would have been
his 56th birthday. It threatened rain all afternoon and then cleared in time for sunset, the sky
seeming to turn in an instant the warm purples and reds of a bruise.
