SUBJUGATING CONSTERNATION

When it all turns over
like walking through seaweed
with slimy icky sticky strands
that rub and slap at naked ankles
and the broken shells debris scrub
the tender footfall soles—
indecision surfaces.

As the depth keeps increasing
and waves smack and chill,
the tendency to retreat exudes.
Those who keep going –
one – three – five more steps –
find buoyant calm
and a smooth sandy bottom.

EXALTING SUNSHINE

After three days
of cold mists, rain,
thunder, lightning
and gales force winds,
I wake to soft light
coming through the windows.
You are asleep next to me.
I resist the urge to wake you—
share the light with me.

Instead,
I quietly walk down the stairs
and out onto the back deck.
There is a soothing warmth
emitting from the sunlight
that assures me
the dark forces have fled.
