SURFERS UNDER THE PIER
The surfers under the pier
have gathered in a loose circle.
They appear to be waiting for the surf
to pick up.
Seated on their boards, legs straddled.
Dipping in the water below the knee.
Some with their black water suits
pulled down to their waists,
showing off a leanly muscled swimmer’s body.
Shoulders broad as pelican fly bys.
Others are fully fitted.
Like sea-riding ninjas trying to outdo
one another.
While the old fishermen stand smoking
over the scaling stations.
And the sand from the beach
gets everywhere.
