C.W. BIGELOW

Dusk hanging low
above the beach—
smothering us as
we surrendered
to overwhelming
hunger brought on
by absence,
and the beach boardwalk
squeaked under us
as my hands groped
beneath your wet
bikini bottoms
and you opened
your stance
before we sprinted
across the sand
and climbed
the vacant lifeguard tower.
And we’ve never
been as ravenous
as the ocean
rhythmically lapped the beach
before we searched
darker spots in the
beach grass
to protect the boardwalk strollers
from our activities,
if not from our
screams.
Still dancing
in our memories,
the hunger rises,
when the offshore
breezes drift
over high tide.
